Mr. Zhou Rui was granted the Specialist of Sports Medicine qualification in 2023 and is registered with the New Zealand Chinese Medicine Council (No. 1631). He is currently the first and only CMC Specialist in this field in New Zealand, specialising in sports injuries and musculoskeletal problems. He has a unique interdisciplinary education background in Chinese Medicine, Western Medicine, Sports Medicine, and Sports Science. His career focuses on the treatment of various sports injuries such as rotator cuff injuries, tennis elbow, TFCC injuries, torn meniscus, patellar tendinitis, and Achilles tendinitis, as well as handling challenging musculoskeletal cases such as frozen shoulder, cervical spondylosis, herniated disc, and wrist pain. He also assists in the management of chronic musculoskeletal pain, post-operative rehabilitation, and pre-operative treatment. Mr. Zhou Rui is currently providing medical services to a large number of elite athletes and organisations in New Zealand, including NZ Tennis, Auckland Tennis, NZ Badminton, Black Dragon, NZ Fencing, and NZ Figure Skating. Mr. Zhou Rui is also a Specialist of Sports Medicine and a member of the Chinese Sports Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association in China. He holds a valid licence as a Sports Medicine Specialist and Attending Physician in China. He previously worked at Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital, the only designated Chinese medicine hospital for national team athletes appointed by the Chinese Olympic Committee. He has extensive experience in the treatment and prevention of injuries for a large number of professional athletes and amateur players. From 2012 to 2019, he served as a medical officer for the China National Softball Team, Sichuan Provincial Tennis Team, Sichuan Provincial Volleyball Team, Jiangsu Provincial Softball Team, and others. On a personal note, Mr. Zhou Rui has a strong passion for sports that extends beyond the realm of medicine. He holds a certification from the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) in the United States, reflecting his dedication to the science of sports and injury prevention. This certification has allowed him to explore the fundamentals of sport, gain valuable insights into athletic techniques, and understand the intricate relationship between physical performance and injury prevention. As a high-level tennis player ranked within the top 500 in New Zealand, he actively participates in interclub competitions and international tournaments, enjoying both the challenges and camaraderie these events offer. His participation in tournaments around the world not only provides him with opportunities to showcase his skills but also reinforces the crucial role that technique plays in athletic performance. Balancing roles as both a coach and an athlete has given Mr. Zhou Rui a unique perspective, highlighting the paramount importance of technique in sport. As a seasoned sports medicine doctor, he draws upon his multifaceted experience to optimise athletes’ physical condition and implement effective injury prevention strategies. Through this holistic approach, he aims to help athletes perform at their best while minimising the risk of injury, contributing to their overall health and success in sport.
